See that? Doesn't even take a trained-eye to know that's Baby Senn cookin' in the Kim-oven. On Friday we went to the doctor for our first ultrasound, and it produced some pretty amazing pictures. At least we think so.
12 weeks and 4 days. We had already heard the baby's heartbeat a week earlier (171 beats/sec!), but to be able to actually see what's been growing in Kim's belly was pretty jaw-dropping. We've been doing our reading and talking to a lot of people, so we thought we knew what to expect. But nothing could have prepared us for seeing the little one for the first time.The thing that was most amazing to both of us was that it looks like...a baby. Maybe hard to tell from the pictures here, but both of us expected something that was a little harder to make out, and something the doctor would have to explain. But from the first image that appeared on the screen, it was pretty clear what we were looking at.

This is a 3D image. (They actually call it a 4D image, but I don't know what the last D is for.) We've seen these before and thought they were kind of oddly alien-like; but now that it's ours, we think it's pretty fantastic. You get a real sense of the space he or she is hanging out in. You can see the head, little arms and hands up by the face, torso, and tiny little legs at the bottom of the image.

It was an amazing morning. We've known for a while now that Kimberly is pregnant, but being able to see the baby with our own eyes really brought it home. (For me, at least. I suppose Kim's expanding belly and afternoon queasiness already brought it home for her.) And after a successful doctor's appointment that held only good news, we feel we're allowed to be excited about it all, and can't wait to tell everyone we know. Because it looks like Kim's cookin' up a good one.
UPDATE: Our friend Jenn kindly pointed out a concerning typo - the baby's heart rate was 171 beats per minute, not per second. (It was a Freudian slip/typo - MY heart rate was 171 beats per second when I heard the baby's.)

Hello Senns! Love the US images - aren't they amazing and awe-inspiring?! You'll cherish them forever, trust me! The 4th D is the movement in the 4D ultrasound (so a 3D image with real-time movement). I won't get one of those until my next pregnancy as they don't have the capabilities through our clinic unless you're high risk, so consider yourselves lucky to have had that one without paying extra :) OH, and I hope your litle peanut's heartrate was a typo and was really 171 beats/min and not per second ;) Made me giggle, though. Keep us updated, we are so excited to see another set of friends going through this amazing journey! We'll be praying all goes well!
